A software programming error in the Engine Control Module may cause the combustion engine to not restart whilst driving. This condition, with a depleted High Voltage battery, could lead to a loss of motive power. A depleted high voltage battery is preceded by warnings in the instrument cluster.
A loss of motive power while driving could increase the risk of an accident and injury to a vehicle occupant or other road users. In the event of a serious accident this may result in death.
Owners can perform an Over the Air (OTA ) software update to eligible vehicles. This will download the updated software to the vehicle rectifying the concern. If the owner does not want to do an Over the Air (OTA) software update or the vehicle is ineligible for an Over the Air (OTA) software update they can take their vehicle to a Volvo dealer and they will update the vehicle's software at no cost to the owner.
