BMW Recalls

2022–2025 BMW 520i, 540d xDr, 740i, i5 eDrive, i5 M60 x, i7 M70 x, i7 xDrive & M5

The air conditioning (A/C) wiring harness may become damaged during routine microfilter (cabin air filter) replacement. This may cause an internal short circuit, which could lead the sensor to overheat. This could pose a risk of smoke entering the cabin or a vehicle fire while driving.

2010–2022 BMW Multiple BMW: F0x 5/6/7-series, F1x 5/6-series X5 X6, G3x 5-series, G1x 7-series., BMW: F2x 1/2-series X3 X4, F48 X1, F39 X2, F45 2-series, F3x 3/4-series, G0x X3 X4 X5 X6., MINI: F5x MINI Cooper, F6x MINI Countryman.

Due to a manufacturing defect, the Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) cooler may develop an internal coolant leak. If this occurs, the leaking coolant and recirculated exhaust gas may combine, which may result in a reduction of engine power and potentially a fire while driving.

2020–2023 BMW 2,3,4,5,7 Series (G12, G2x, G3x, G42) , X3 (G01) , X4 (G02), X5 (G05), Z4 (G29)

Due to a manufacturing defect, the starter motor solenoid switch can experience increased wear that could cause an internal short circuit. If this occurs, the driver may be unable to start the engine, and in the worst case, the overheating can lead to a fire during vehicle operation.

2016–2020 BMW 320d, 320i, 330i, 420i, 430i, 520d, 520i, 530i, 620d, 630i, X3, X4 & Z4

Due to a manufacturing defect, inadequate sealing of the starter motor may allow moisture to enter into the unit. If this occurs, corrosion may result in the engine not starting. In rare cases, it could also cause a short circuit leading to overheating of the starter motor and in the worst case, to a vehicle fire while parked or driving.

2024–2025 BMW X3

Due to a manufacturing defect, the outer head restraints of the rear row seats may not be manufactured correctly. As a result, they may move or detach from the seat in an event of an accident.

2024 BMW M 1000 R & M 1000 XR M 1000 R (KM3 MUE, 0P51/0P53), M 1000 R (KM3, 0E81/0E83), M 1000 XR (KM9, 0E91/0E93)

Due to a manufacturing defect, the steering damper may be defective. As a result, the rider could experience unexpected increased steering effort leading to a loss of vehicle control.

2024–2025 BMW 520i and X3

Due to a manufacturing defect, an electrical connection within the vehicle’s starter generator may not have been assembled to specifications. This could cause a sudden loss of power whilst driving. In addition, a faulty connection may also generate excessive heat, which could lead to a vehicle fire.

2020–2024 BMW R18

Due to a manufacturing defect, insufficient sealing of the reverser system control unit may allow moisture to enter into the unit. If this occurs, it could cause a short circuit leading to a vehicle fire.

2009–2024 BMW HP4, S 1000 RR, S 1000 R, S 1000 XR, HP4 Race, M 1000 R, M 1000RR, M 1000 XR K46, K47, K49, K60, K63, K66, K67, K69, KM3, KM9

A production batch of oil filters had a manufacturing defect that can result in the threaded connection becoming loose at high RPM. As a result, oil could leak resulting in an engine stall or accumulation in the presence of an ignition source resulting in a vehicle fire. The oil filters may have been fitted during a service or oil change.

2017–2024 BMW X3, X3M, Alpina XD3 (G01, F97)

The attachment for the interior cargo rail may become damaged in the event of an extreme rear impact. This could result in the interior cargo rail detaching from the vehicle.

2020–2024 BMW R18 R 18 Transcontinental, R18, R18 B, R18 Classic, R18 Roctane

Due to a manufacturing defect, insufficient sealing of the reverser system control unit may allow moisture to enter into the unit. If this occurs, it could cause a short circuit leading to a vehicle fire.

2022–2024 BMW iX1, iX2, X1, X2, X5, X6, X7

Due to a manufacturing defect, a component of the brake booster system may have been incorrectly welded and could break. If this occurs, a higher pedal force will be required and the braking distance may be extended. In addition, the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) systems may not function. Note: Drivers will be alerted by the brake warning light in the instrument cluster and a message will appear on the central display.

2011–2018 BMW 328i, 520i, 528i, X1, X3, Z4

Due to a manufacturing defect, liquid may enter the electrical water pump connectors. This could cause an electrical short circuit leading to a vehicle fire.

2022–2024 BMW MINI and Alpina X models

Due to a manufacturing defect, signal interference may occur within the electronics of the brake system.  If the fault occurs, a higher pedal force may be required for braking. The anti-lock braking system and dynamic stability control will also not be available.   Note: Drivers will be alerted by the brake warning light in the instrument cluster and a message will appear on the central display.

2023–2024 BMW R 1300 GS

The starter motor relay plastic cover may have been damaged during production, allowing moisture to enter into the Printed Circuit Board (PCB). As a result, the rider may be unable to restart the engine and/or an electrical short circuit may occur leading to a vehicle fire.

2017–2024 BMW X3, X3M, Alpina XD3 (G01, F97)

The attachment for the interior cargo rail may become damaged in the event of an extreme rear impact. This could result in the interior cargo rail detaching from the vehicle.

2004–2014 BMW 1 Series, 3 Series, X1, X3 (E83, E84, E87, E90, E91)

Some vehicles may have been converted after production with steering wheel variants containing a faulty Takata inflator. As a result, the driver's airbag inflator may rupture in the event of airbag deployment. The ACCC has published a related high risk recall. 2009–2017 BMW Multiple F series Models

This recall has been updated for expansion of VINs. Some vehicles may have been converted after production with steering wheel variants containing a faulty Takata inflator. As a result, the driver's airbag inflator may rupture in the event of airbag deployment.

The bolts connecting the variable camshaft timing unit to the engine may break. This may activate the limp home mode safety feature and potentially cause the engine warning light to illuminate and the vehicle to lose motive power.

2022–2023 BMW M 100 R and R 1250 RS As per VIN list

Due to a software issue, the daytime running lights (DRL) will not provide the correct brightness.

2022–2023 BMW G60 and G70 520i, 740i, i5, i7

Due to a manufacturing defect, the steering wheel earth wire may become loose. If this occurs, the driving assist functions such as hands-off the steering wheel warning or emergency stop may not activate as intended.

2022 BMW G70 i7 xDrive and 740i

The front windshield wipers may fail. In the event of rain this may lead to poor visibility for the driver.

2022 BMW X1

The outer seat belts in the second row may become jammed at the bottom of the trim panels. As a result, the seat belts may not operate as intended.

2022–2023 BMW iX1 xDrive

Due to a manufacturing defect, the front right drive shaft may become loose and detach from the eDrive. If this occurs, it could lead to a sudden loss of motive power. Note: In an event of failure the driver will receive warning signals in instrument cluster.

2022–2023 BMW iX1 xDrive

Due to a manufacturing defect, the front left drive shaft may become loose and detach from the eDrive. If this occurs, it could cause a sudden loss of motive power. Note: In an event of failure the driver will receive warning signals in the instrument cluster.

2022 BMW 740i One vehicle only

Due to a manufacturing defect, the front seat frame may have been incorrectly welded. As a result, the welded connection could fracture and impair the restraint function of the seat.

2020–2022 BMW K63- S1000 R and K69- S1000 XR Only vehicles which have received a software update during a workshop visit

Due to a software issue during a past vehicle software update, the front wheel lift detection component of the DYNAMIC PRO riding mode has been reset to the factory setting of zero. As a result there may not be any assistance on front wheel lift detection (wheelie control).

2022–2023 BMW KM3- M1000 R, and K67 MU- S1000 RR All KM3- M1000 R, K67MU- S1000 RR Only with optional 'billet pack'

Due to a manufacturing issue, the fulcrum pin in the optional milled front brake lever may not meet the required specifications. This may result in brakes not working as intended.

2017–2023 BMW (K50) R1250 GS, (K51) R1250 GS Adventure, (K52) R1250 RT-P Authority Vehicle

Under certain circumstances, operating the vehicle with abrupt and major speed differences between the engine and final drive can result in overloading, and subsequent damage to the transmission input shaft. This may cause the rear wheel to lock, resulting in a loss of vehicle control.

2022 BMW i20 iX

Due to a manufacturing defect, the high voltage battery may not meet specifications and could discharge or in some instances lead to a vehicle fire.

2021–2022 BMW G26 i4

Due to a manufacturing defect, the high voltage battery may not meet specifications and could discharge or in some instances lead to a vehicle fire.

2022 BMW (K63) S1000 R, (K67) S1000 RR, (K69) S1000 XR & (K66) M1000 RR

Due to a manufacturing issue, the clutch cover screws may become loose. If this occurs, engine oil may leak onto the road and come in contact with the right side of the rear tyre. This could result in a loss of vehicle control.

2019–2021 BMW G07 X7, 2019 - 2021 Specific VINs only

Due to a manufacturing issue, the compression springs of the seat locking mechanisms in the third row may not have been installed correctly. In the event of an accident or hard braking, unrestrained luggage could become loose and the rear seat also could collapse towards the passengers.

2020–2022 BMW CE 04

Due to a manufacturing issue, the connection of the horn to the frame of the motorcycle could become loose and may detach. As a result, it could fall downwards and prevent the rider from steering to the left, resulting in a loss of vehicle control.

2021–2022 BMW I20 iX 2022, G26 i4 2021

Due to a manufacturing defect, the high voltage battery does not meet specifications and may result in an electrical short circuit. If this occurs it may result in a vehicle fire.

2021–2022 BMW I20 iX, 2021 - 2022

Due to a software issue with the airbag control unit, the airbag warning lamp and warning message may not be illuminated in the instrument cluster as intended. If this occurs the vehicle occupants may not be alerted to the potential failure of the airbag control or pedestrian protection systems.

2018–2020 BMW K1600

Due to a manufacturer defect the pivot struts that connect the rear suspension to the frame may break. This could cause the rear of the bike to drop onto the tyre, resulting in heavy deceleration of the rear wheel and instability for the rider.

2020 BMW X5 xDrive45e PHEV

Due to a manufacturing defect, the battery does not meet specifications and may experience an electrical short circuit when fully charged, which could result in a fire.

2016–2020 BMW X3, X4, and 5 Series

A software update issue may lead to an engine failure whilst driving and a red Check Control message "Drive faulty” may also appear.

2020 BMW S1000RR

The screw plug in the rocker arm was not sufficiently tightened during manufacturing. As a result, oil may leak from the affected bolting points.

2019–2020 BMW M8, X5, X6, X7, 7 SERIES, 8 SERIES, M3, M4

Due to a manufacturing fault in the hydraulic unit brake booster, panic braking could cause loss of brake power assistance and the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) without prior warning. Although the electronic brake force distribution function is maintained, the loss of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) may result in reduced braking performance.

2017–2019 BMW G310 GS, G310R, C400GT, C400X

Due to road treatment conditions, such as aggressive salt types or significant usage, surface corrosion could occur within the un-anodised brake caliper piston bore.

2007–2010 BMW X5, X6

The plug connection from the wiring harness to the blower controller may deteriorate over time. This may cause the plug-in contact to short circuit or overheat.

0 BMW 3, 5, 7 SERIES, X5, MINI COUNTRYMAN

Foreign bodies or particles may have entered the battery cells and could cause a malfunction in a fully charged high-voltage battery.

0 BMW X5, X6, X7

Due to a fault in the welding process, a weld seam on the front axle was not welded properly.

0 BMW X3, X4

The front seat belts (driver and passenger’s side) may not be screwed on to correct specification.

2020 BMW R 1250GS, R 1250 RT, R 1250 R, R 1250 RS

Australian Design Rules (ADR) 61 and 83 require vehicles to be fitted with a compliance plate and noise emission label. The compliance plate and/or noise emission label may partially detach from the motorcycle or become illegible over time.

2018–2019 BMW X3 M, X4 M, Z4

The steering track rods may be damaged when exposed to high temperatures and vibrational loads. If the steering track rods are damaged or break, the vehicle will have limited steering ability and may not steer as expected.

2012–2018 BMW M6

The centre high mounted stop lamp may not be adequately attached to the vehicle and may loosen or detach.

0 BMW M5, M8

Due to an incorrectly routed section of the wiring harness, the transmission wiring harness may short circuit and shift the transmission into the neutral gear.

2013–2019 BMW X6

When using child seats with ISOFIX mounting and additional support on the vehicle floor, it can lead to fatigue fractures of the ISOFIX retaining brackets. Causing the ISOFIX brackets to crack around the welded point in the vehicle.

1997–2000 BMW E46 3 Series Coupes: 318Ci, 320Ci, 323Ci, 328Ci, 330Ci, Sedans: 316i, 318i, 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i

Affected vehicles may be fitted with a Takata NADI 5-AT driver airbag inflator that could allow moisture to enter the unit and degrade the airbag propellant. If this occurs, the properties of the propellant may be changed so that the propellant does not react as intended during a collision, causing mis-deployment of the airbag. Additionally some vehicles previously checked under campaign number 0032950200 will need to be inspected again to have the previously checked inflator replaced with a new inflator under campaign number 0032200300.

2016–2019 BMW K1600 GT, K1600 GTL

If damage to the shift fork/selector sleeve/gearwheel occurs, gear changes may not be performed correctly. If gear changes cannot be performed correctly, two gears may be engaged at the same time.

Cracks in the rubber hose of the oil cooler may allow a small amount of oil to leak.

The CFK drive shaft contains a 3-hole-flange with pushing piece which is not produced with sufficient long-term durability. The pushing piece for the length compensation can be pulled out of the 3-hole-flange over time.

2001–2002 BMW E53

Due to a possible mismatch of software and hardware within the airbag control, the front airbags may be activated whilst parking the vehicle. The affected vehicles are required to have the airbag control unit reprogrammed; no parts are required.

0 BMW X3 & X4 Series

There is a possibility of air being trapped in the hydraulic braking system.

2016–2018 BMW GS 310

The motorcycle side stand connection might bend or break.

2005–2011 BMW E9x 3 SERIES

The electrical wiring and the fan resistor for the vehicle's interior fan blower motor may deteriorate over time.

2007–2011 BMW E8x 1 Series (CPA: 33113) BMW E9x 3 Series (CPA: 33767)

Due to a possible electrical connection failure to the cars main battery power cable where it connects into the vehicles fuse box, the car may lose power to several electrical systems within the vehicle.

Faulty software may cause the fuel pump to stop working while the car is in motion.

2015–2016 BMW C 650 SPORT/ C 650 GT, F 700 GS/F 800 GS ADVENTURE

The malfunction indicator light is not activated properly in the event of a fault.

2013–2017 BMW R nineT

The screws retaining the right fixed baring stud, fixing the rear wheel swinging arm may come loose from the frame.

2013–2017 BMW R1200 GS GS ADVENTURE

The fixed fork tube can suffer preliminary damage when unusual incidents with momentary high stress occur.

2016–2017 BMW X1 WAGON

During production of the dashboard panel the process of milling the “weak points or deployment points” in the passenger side of the panel has not been carried out. These points are used as a break point of the dashboard panel if the passenger airbag is triggered.

2014–2016 BMW i3 (I01)

The fuel tank ventilation line may not be correctly located. If the ventilation line rubs against the vehicle, it may wear through.

2010–2015 BMW G650 GS G 650 GS SERTAO

Software errors in the engine control unit (Digital Motor Electronics-E) can cause a faulty setting of the idle controller. In some cases, this can result in the engine stalling when it is at idle speed and the clutch is disengaged.

2012 BMW SERIES 5 & SERIES 7

If the vehicle is involved in a frontal or rear-end collision, the crash data may not be evaluated correctly by the vehicles airbag central sensor and this may lead to the passive restraint systems (front airbags and seat belt tensioners) not being activated.

2010–2016 BMW F25 X3 & F26 X4

Under certain conditions, the ISOFIX brackets may break as a result of vibration stress.

2015 BMW 7 Series (G11 & G12)

Due to an error in the manufacturing process of the supplier, small metallic particles (stamping residue) can stick to the inside of the airbag control unit housing.

0 BMW MW C 600 Sport & BMW C 650 GT

Due to the incorrect positioning of the abrasion protector, the flexibility of the front brake hose may be impaired. This can result in the brake hose suffering damage and may lead to a loss of brake fluid. The stopping power of the front brake could diminish, dependent on the amount of brake fluid lost.

0 BMW BMW G 650 GS & G 650 GS Sertao

Software issues in the BMS-E engine management ECU, and the possibility of an air leak due to a loose intake stub, may cause the engine to stall.

2013–2014 BMW F2X & F3X

The electric fuel pump may fail due to a manufacturing defect.

2002–2011 BMW K25-29, K40, K43 & K44 SERIES

During maintenance work on brake discs or wheel changes, threaded fasteners might have been overtightened to torques not in compliance with the values set out in the repair instructions or operating instructions.

2010–2012 BMW S1000RR

BMW Motorrad has ascertained that the screws securing the side-stand pivot mount can work loose. Due to a process fault, the part of the frame where the side-stand pivot mount sits was not adequately cleaned.

2013–2014 BMW C600 SPORT & C650 GT

Due to a manufacturing defect the timing-chain tensioner is subject to wear. Gradually the timing chain may no longer be adequately tensioned and could slip it's sprockets, causing the engine to stall.

2009–2012 BMW E7x E8x E9x F07 F1x F25 (N55 engine).

The bolted connection on the housing of the variable valve timing unit (VANOS) adjustment units may become loose. As a result the units may develop an internal oil leak and then no longer adjust quickly enough due to the reduced oil pressure. The vehicle then goes into engine emergency mode and the engine warning light is permanently lit.

2009–2012 BMW E6x E7x E8x E9x F0x F1x F25 (N51,N52 & N55 engines)

The bolted connection on the housing of the variable valve timing unit (VANOS) adjustment units may become loose. As a result the units may develop an internal oil leak and then no longer adjust quickly enough due to the reduced oil pressure. The vehicle then goes into engine emergency mode and the engine warning light is permanently lit.

It cannot be ruled out that the piston rod of the rear spring strut, in connection with the Dynamic ESA option, could break.

2012–2013 BMW R1200 GS

Load cycle shifts occurring when the vehicle is on the move causes pressure spikes in the engine oil at the shaft seal and these pressures can force the shaft seal out of its seat. Engine oil can then escape into the rear wheel swing arm and can make its way onto the rear tyre.

0 BMW X5

It is possible that when the rear door child safety locks are engaged (locked), if the interior door handle is operated, the door may still open.

2011–2013 BMW C600, C650, R1200, F700, F800.

A production fault has resulted in some side stands switches that are not correctly sealed.

2006–2009 BMW K71 F800 S & F800 ST

Due to incorrect tolerances in the driveline, corrosion may occur between the inner bearing race of the needle roller bearing and the bearing seat of the input shaft, possibly compromising the bearing sealing ring. Due to increased wear, this may lead to excessive play at the rear wheel.

2010–2013 BMW K1600 GT & K1600GTL

BMW Motorrad has noticed that in some cases an incorrect fault entry has been programmed into the fault memory of the Digital Motor Electronics System (DME).

2012–2013 BMW 1,3,5 SERIES, X1,3 &Z4

Over time the vacuum pump may fail completely due to a lack of lubrication. As a result, the power brake booster unit is not supplied with sufficient vacuum force, which reduces the effectiveness of the brake assistance function.

0 BMW K 1300 S & K 1300 R

Vibration on long rides at a constant high engine rpm, under certain circumstances can cause foaming of the brake fluid in the brake reservoir.

0 BMW K1200 S, R & R SPORT

Vibration on long rides at a constant high engine rpm, under certain circumstances, can cause foaming of the brake fluid in the brake reservoir.

2010–2013 BMW MINI

Moisture can penetrate the plug-in connection of the adapter cable on the Electric Power Steering - EPS.

2009 BMW 5 series sedan & wagon x5 & x6 wagons, 1 & 7 series diesel variants

An internal short-circuit may occur in the area of the electric contacts of the diesel fuel filter heating unit.

0 BMW F 700 GS, F 800 GS

Over time the side stand could work loose, causing it to become unattached from the motorcycle. Additionally, the side stand switch may not work reliably and the engine will not shut down when the motorcycle is in gear and the side stand is in the down position.

2007–2011 BMW SERIES 1 & 3, X1 & Z4

The plug-in contact of the battery-positive cable on the front power distributor (fitted behind the glove compartment) may be damaged by vehicle vibrations. Damage to the plug-in contact may impair the power supply to the vehicle.

2007–2010 BMW E70 X5

Engine oil which has entered the brake booster may damage the internal rubber membrane. The membrane may develop a leak and this will impair the brake power assistance system.

2011–2012 BMW S 1000 RR motorcycle

BMW Motored has found that there have been a few, isolated cases of engine damage occurring at high engine rpm. This was caused by conrod bolts working loose.

2006–2011 BMW MINI COOPER S TURBO CLUBMAN, HARDTOP, CABRIO & COUNTRYMAN

The additional coolant pump for the exhaust turbocharger may fail. This may cause overheating and scorching of the coolant pump.

2003–2010 BMW 5 Series sedan & wagon, 6 Series coupe & convertible

Due to an assembly error, the battery cover may not have been correctly clipped to the floor panel. This may cause loosening of the positive terminal cable connection.

2007–2011 BMW X5, X6, 5, 5-GT, 6, & 7 SERIES

The coolant pump for the exhaust turbocharger may fail due to a defect in its printed circuit board.

2008–2009 BMW 5, X5, X6, X3, 1 & 7 SERIES

Moisture may enter the diesel fuel filter heater at the electric contacts. (Note: The diesel fuel filter heater unit only operates at tempratures below -1° Celcius.)

2004–2010 BMW K1200 GT, K1200 R, K1200 R Sport, K1200 S, K1300 GT, K1300 R, K1300 S

The pivot mount of the relay lever on the rear spring strut can become stiff on account of corrosion. This can be the result of moisture penetrating the assembly (e.g. road spray, water from cleaning the motorcycle with steam cleaner/power hose, riding in winter, severe dirtying).

2001–2009 BMW R1200 Series

Engine oil from the brake vacuum pump may enter the brake vacuum line, possibly allowing oil to enter the brake booster.

2001–2009 BMW Various

Engine oil from the brake vacuum pump may enter the brake vacuum line, possibly allowing oil to enter the brake booster.

2001–2009 BMW F650 FS

Engine oil from the brake vacuum pump may enter the brake vacuum line, possibly allowing oil to enter the brake booster.

0 BMW R1200 GS, R1200 GS Adventure, R1200 R, R1200 RT, R1200 ST, K1200 GT

"A combination of unfavourable tolerances can mean that the brake lines installed on some motorcycles with BMW Motorrad Integral ABS generation II might be under strain. The vibrations that occur when the motorcycle is being ridden could cause the front brake lines to develop leaks"

2006–2009 BMW R1200 RT-P

Brake lines installed on the affected motorcycles might be installed under strain. The vibrations that occur when the motorcycle is being ridden could cause the brake lines to develop leaks.

In certain high speed, high engine RPM situations foaming can develop in the front brake master cylinder reservoir.

2008 BMW F800 GS

Front-wheel quick-release axles that are not in compliance with design specifications might be installed in some motorcycles. Some G650 Xchallenge motorcycles left the factory with the wrong circlip installed on the left-hand side of the rear wheel-bearing guide. The result can be that this circlip rubs against the spacing bushing. The particles of metal removed by friction can penetrate the wheel bearing and cause failure. There is also the possibility of incorrect sensor signals causing the ABS to malfunction. If this happens the ABS warning light comes on, alerting the rider to the situation. Even under these circumstances, the brakes remain fully available to slow the motorcycle.

The affected units may have been fitted with clamping blocks and top fork bridges that do not meet specification in accordance with the technical drawings.

If temperatures are below O°C, circumstances can combine to cause water vapours produced in the oil tank to condensate that can cause freezing of the vapour that could block the oil tank breather.

A temporary fault in the greasing system for the sealing ring on the brake booster could lead to the sealing ring being subject to wear. In unfavourabale situations, the sealing ring may even be pressed into the housing of the brake booster as a consequence of increased friction.
